ABOUT THE EXPEDITION

This is a two-part expedition, and you can participate in either one…or both, for the
Ultimate Falkland Islands Photo Expedition!

Part One - Land-Based Expedition

We will arrive in Stanley, the Falkland’s capital, on November 8.  Our exact itinerary is yet to be determined, but we will soon depart for Sea Lion Island where we will spend 3 nights in a hotel/lodge.  While here, we have all meals included, and you may indeed opt to leave the lodge after breakfast with a packed lunch, and not return until dinner. You will be free to roam the island on foot, within the limits of safety and respect for the wildlife.

Just a few steps away from the lodge is the largest colony of southern elephant seals in the Falklands, and this is where orcas famously hunt elephant seals in the

shallows. Additionally, there are South American sea lions and many species of birds on the island, including 4 species of penguin, colonies of blue-eyed shags, and the delightful striated caracara. Other species include several shorebirds, many ducks and geese, gulls and terns, and a fine representation of the passerines of the Falklands.

We will then return to Stanley for three more days, where Gypsy Cove is a short taxi ride away.  Along the rocky outcrops and white sand beaches of Gypsy Cove, as well as in the colorful vegetation, you will find yourself among Magellanic penguins, rock cormorants, black-crowned night-herons, gulls, terns, passerines, as well as potentially several species of raptor. Two species of dolphin are often near shore.

On at least one day, we will take a day-long overland trip to Volunteer Point where there are thousands of penguins and other wildlife.  This is the only place in the Falklands where we will encounter large numbers of king penguins.  This is a not-to-be-missed location.  You will also see that the waterfront and town of Stanley is quite photogenic.

 .

Part Two - Ship-Based Expedition

There is no better way to access the remote islands of the Falklands archipelago than by small boat. For some islands, there is no other way. We will visit a string of very special islands in the west and north, to prioritize spending time with the most spectacular of the many bird colonies of the Falklands: Expect to see and photograph five species of penguin, the world’s largest colonies of black-browed albatross, scores of wildfowl, shorebird and passerine species, perhaps the world’s most charismatic raptor, three species of seal and two species of dolphin, dramatic scenery of cliffs and sweeping hillsides, and much more. The days will be long, the wildlife encounters mind-blowing and the photography intense.

There is only one vessel in the whole world which offers an in-depth tour of the most remote parts of the Falklands archipelago. And that boat only offers this opportunity for one brief period of time every year. We can therefore truly say that our Falklands tour is absolutely unique and something similar cannot be found anywhere else. We have the Hans Hansson for the one and only FALKLAND ISLANDS PHOTOGRAPHY BONANZA 7-night tour in 2025. This is a period when the birds are all present in the colonies or on their nests, when many of the flowers are in bloom, and when the elephant seals are mating on the beaches, while the youngsters are still being weened. It is after the coldest winter weather and the windier summer months and before the longest of the summer days. We should have fine, long days with colorful sunrises and sunsets, and the opportunity to be out during the entire length of daylight hours. In November, we cannot expect very many chicks yet, but we should still see a lot of pair-bonding behavior among the birds.

We have 7 days in which to explore, and based on previous experience, we shall prioritize getting onto a couple of otherwise entirely inaccessible islands far to the north-west. In the island group called The Jasons, we hope to make several landings, and we may spend as long as 2-3 days in this remarkable, wild, remote, uninhabited, almost inaccessible part of the world. There is NO OTHER WAY to visit the Jasons than by boat. Depending on the weather patterns, this may be our first priority, or we may arrive to these islands after visiting several others.

Some of the other islands which we intend to visit include the fabulous trio of Saunders, New and Carcass. Each of these wildlife hot-spots are easily worth a full day. Here, you may take your time to linger near large concentrations of gentoo, rockhopper and Magellanic penguins, blue-eyed shags and black-browed albatrosses, or for that matter South American sea lions and southern elephant seals, or you may saunter among scores of species of waders, ducks, geese, raptors, and passerines. You will most likely be able to see and photograph the fully endemic Falkland Islands flightless steamer-duck and Cobb’s wren, as well as the near-endemic striated caracara and blackish cinclodes (locally known as Johnny Rook and Tussock-bird respectively).

I will enthusiastically be available as a photo instructor, providing insights, tips and one-on-one help with equipment, settings, etc. Morten Jorgensen will be there as the expedition leader, planning the day-to-day activities in co-operation with the crew, with Mark, and with yourselves, based on the experience he has accumulated during his many visits to the Falklands and his many years as a guide in the small-ship expedition cruise industry.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Good sightings and excellent photographic opportunities of just about all of the regularly breeding and summertime- occurring birds of the Falkland Islands.

  • Close-up experiences of (large) colonies of king, gentoo, rockhopper and Magellanic penguins, black-browed albatross (including the world’s largest colony) and king/imperial/blue-eyed shag/cormorant.

  • Several opportunities to see and photograph South American sea lion and southern elephant seal (the World’s largest pinniped). Good opportunities of seeing Orca.

  • Great encounters with a range of cetaceans, particularly the charming Commerson’s dolphin and the larger, agile Peale’s dolphin, both endemic to the waters around southern South America. Other special species that are possible are sei whale and orca.

  • Weather of a mostly temperate and variable nature. Daytime temperatures should average 12-15C/54-59F, while night-time temperatures can drop to about 5C/41F. Winds can be anything, from flat calm to high, but the islands do for the most part offer some lee if the sea is up. The Falkland climate is relatively dry, the western-more islands being the driest (but also the windiest).

  • Long days and early nights, beginning at dawn or soon after and continuing until after sunset, with near constant wildlife and wilderness opportunities of an ever-changing nature. Occasionally we may be underway in the morning with an opportunity to sleep in if you wish.

  • Varied and extended shore excursions on a range of islands offering a host of different wildlife viewing opportunities.

  • Activity Level is easy to moderate. You must be able to get in/out of a zodiac. While on land, you do not have to stay in a group and you can explore at your own pace. Nearly every location will have photo opportunities that are easily accessible. At some landings, the most desirable location to photograph may be more difficult, but can be done at a leisurely pace

PLACES WE MAY VISIT IN THE FALKLAND ISLANDS

Volunteer Point - Here we will find the largest colony of King Penguins (ca. 2000 pairs) in the entire island group, and along the beautiful beach and shores we will enjoy numerous other breeding birds, flowering plant and perhaps more views of sea lions and dolphins.

Sea Lion Island - Here we shall enjoy the luxury of easy walking to some of the many wildlife viewing opportunities of the island. There are colonies of three species of penguin and much other birdlife. Sea Lion Island is also a stronghold for Southern Elephant Seal in the Falklands and there are also South American Sea Lions. This is also one of the best places in the archipelago to see Orca and November is the time when they often begin hunting seals in the shallows.

Saunders Island, The Neck - Here, the concentration of wildlife is so overwhelming that a few hours is no-where-near enough to take it all in. Among the highlights here will the the cormorant/shag colony, mixed with large numbers of Rockhopper Penguins, and the easy access to breeding Black-browed Albatrosses.

Carcass Island - Named after an 18th century vessel, this island is gentle, calm and un-dramatic. It is home to Commerson’s and Peale’s Dolphins offshore, and almost all the variety of passerines on the that the Falklands can offer…including a healthy population Cobb’s Wren. Here we will also see Southern Crested Caracara, we usually see Flying Steamer Duck, and we have a good chance to pick up some other birds that are often difficult to find.

Steeple Jason Island - Remote, isolated, exposed…and extraordinary! Most of the people visiting the Falklands only dream of visiting Steeple Jason, but it is not on many itineraries. The scenery is outstanding. The island hosts the largest colony of Black-browed Albatross in the World. The number of other birds is impressive too, not least the Giant Petrels, Caracras and Skuas.

Grand Jason Island - The largest Island of the Jason Island group boasts large numbers of Black-browed Albatross, Striated Caracara, Giant Petrels and Falkland Skuas

New Island - Here the scenery is outstanding and there is an amazing concentration of wildlife (with more than 40 species of breeding birds) and we can easily spend an entire day exploring. Some highlights are South American Fur Seals, Peale’s Dolphin and some King Penguins

Stanley - The capital of the Falkland Island is easily walkable to experience the culture, history, architecture and cafes. Gypsy Cove is a short ride away and contains Magellanic penguins, black-crowned night-herons, oystercatchers, long-tailed meadowlark, two-banded plovers, Falklands flightless steamer duck, upland and kelp geese. Sea Lions often visit here also.

HANS HANSSON

The accommodation on board Hans Hansson is simple yet comfortable. The ship offers two Superior Ensuite Cabins and four Standard Cabins. The cozy lounge is the place to be after a full day of activities to listen to stories and share photographs after a full day of activities. But the best place is out on deck, watching the incredible Falkland landscape and searching for birds, dolphin and whales in the distance. With only a few other guests on board, you can have the space and quiet to explore the Falklands in the ultimate way.
