Imagine drifting slowly down a winding river in the heart of Brazil's Pantanal, surrounded by animmensewilderness of shimmering water, golden grasslands, forests and enormous skies. Theair is warm, birdscall from the trees, caimans lie motionless along the muddy banks, and giantriver otters occasionallysurface beside the boat.
Then someone spots movement on the riverbank.
A jaguar.
Seeing a wild jaguar in the Pantanal is an extraordinary experience. At first, you might see only aflickerof golden fur between the trees. Then the animal steps into the open: powerful shoulders,a beautifullypatterned coat of black rosettes, and an almost impossibly relaxed confidence.
It might walk along the water's edge, pause to drink, settle in the shade or even slip into the riverfor aswim. Jaguars are remarkably strong swimmers, and watching one move through the wateris unforgettable.
Unlike many wildlife destinations where sightings are fleeting, the Pantanal offers some of the world'smostrewarding opportunities to observe wild jaguars, particularly around the Cuiabá River andPorto Jofre region.
